The pattern

Does this sound like yours?

A 30 minute podiatry appointment works out which structure is loaded and what is loading it. Plantar fasciitis is a description of a pattern, not a full explanation, and these are the things people describe when it turns out to be the plantar fascia.

The first few steps in the morning are the worst part of the day, and it eases as you move.
It comes back after you have been sitting for a while, then eases again.
The sore spot is under the heel, slightly toward the inside edge, and it is tender to press.
Standing on hard floors all day makes it worse. So do flat, worn-out shoes.
It settled once, then came back when you started walking or running again.

Plenty of other things cause heel pain, including the Achilles, a bruised heel, a nerve, and stress in the heel bone. That is the point of the appointment: to tell them apart before anyone treats anything.

What happens in the room

  1. 01HistoryWhen it started, what makes it worse, what you have stopped doing, what shoes you live in, and what changed just before it began.
  2. 02AssessmentHow you stand and how you walk, the range and strength around the foot, ankle and calf, and where it is tender. Some of that may reproduce your symptoms, which is how we work out which structure it is.
  3. 03A plan you leave withWhat we think is driving it, what may help settle it, and what to do between now and the follow-up. If we think you need imaging or another practitioner, we say so.

Where it is appropriate, treatment starts in the same appointment

Depending on what we find, that can mean strapping, footwear changes, loading and activity advice, hands-on work, or an orthotic assessment.

Strapping, footwear and loading changes

Hands-on work

An orthotic assessment, if how your foot loads is part of it

Both clinics also run shockwave and laser appointments, and we will tell you if either is worth considering for your case rather than selling it to you up front.

Offer terms. New patients only. Available at our South Brisbane clinic, Unit 1/1 Cordelia St, and not at Indooroopilly. It covers the initial podiatry consult, 30 minutes. No referral needed. The $0 gap applies where your private health extras cover includes podiatry and you have annual limit remaining; your fund and your remaining limit decide what you pay on the day, and it is $99 without eligible cover. We accept all health funds. Anything beyond the first appointment is quoted in the room before it happens. All prices in AUD, per appointment. If you want the figure confirmed for your fund before you book, ring (07) 2103 3978.

If it returns

If it keeps coming back

Heel pain that settles and then returns every time you get active again is usually a loading problem rather than a one-off injury. That is where how your foot sits, how it moves and what you stand in all day start to matter, and where custom orthotics sometimes come in.

Orthotics are one option among several, not the automatic answer. We assess first and tell you whether they are worth it for you.

Questions

Plantar fasciitis, answered

How much does it cost to get plantar fasciitis looked at?

At South Brisbane the first appointment is $0 gap with eligible private health cover, or $99 without cover, for new patients, with no referral needed. Indooroopilly is a standard initial consult fee, so ring (07) 2103 3978 for that figure. We accept all health funds and consults are claimable with private health extras.

How soon can I be seen?

Both clinics run Monday to Friday. The online booking diary shows the times that are actually free, so you can pick one at any hour. Ring if you want the soonest available.

Will the assessment hurt?

Some of it may reproduce your symptoms, because pressing and loading the plantar fascia is part of telling it apart from the other causes of heel pain. Tell us when it is too sore and we stop.

Do I need a referral or a scan first?

No referral is needed to book. You do not need a scan to come in either. If we think imaging would change what we do next, we will say so and arrange it.

Do you take my health fund?

We accept all health funds, and consults are claimable with private health extras cover. What comes back depends on your fund and your level of cover.

Where do I park?

Both clinics have a free parking garage, and both have wheelchair-accessible parking, entrance and restroom.
